FUNCTIONAL ROLES OF A FOREIGN LANGUAGE IN THE PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES OF AN ECONOMIST

This article provides a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the functional
roles of a foreign language in the professional activities of future economists in the context
of contemporary globalization and international economic integration. The study is based
on the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) approach, which emphasizes that language
instruction, rather than focusing solely on general communicative skills, should be
oriented toward specific professional needs. The article examines five major functional
areas: information-cognitive, communicative-negotiation, analytical-writing,
terminological-translation, and professional development functions. The language skills
and competencies specific to each area are identified. In addition, methodological
challenges associated with the implementation of these functions are analyzed, and
recommendations for overcoming them are proposed. The findings may be applied to
improve professionally oriented foreign language programs for economics students in
higher education institutions, as well as professional development programs for
practicing economists.
