OPPORTUNITIES FOR DEVELOPING SPEECH COMPONENTS IN THE GRADE 4 READING LITERACY TEXTBOOK: RESULTS OF CONTENT ANALYSIS

The article examines the potential of the current Grade 4 Reading Literacy textbook
to develop students' speech components—phonetic, lexical, grammatical, and
discursive—using the content analysis method. A total of 350 tasks and 565 questions
from the four parts of the textbook were classified according to speech components and
question levels, and the findings were compared with textbooks for Grades 1–3. The
analysis revealed that tasks aimed at developing the grammatical component account for
only 2.3% in Grade 4, with this proportion steadily declining from Grade 1 onward.
Furthermore, 64.4% of the questions were found to be at the recall level. Based on these findings, recommendations for improving the textbook were proposed.
